Five older anime series for beginners.

*Cross posted from my sister blog.

Since I will soon be reviewing anime and manga for a popular website, I decided to do a quick post about five older series to introduce to fans of newer anime, or even those who are just looking for an introduction series.I made a point to choose each from a different genre so that comparing them to one another would be difficult.I also made sure that they were at least a decade old.I would have gone for much older series, however I just don't see a newbie watching Galaxy Express 999 without falling asleep, or Ranma 1/2 without feeling very confused. No offense to either of those mentioned. They each have merit in either artistic presentation or pure nostalgia depending on who you ask. However, what I am looking to talk about are accessible series with tangible story lines.I want to talk about relatable protagonists and villains that are recognizable as something more than a throwback from a saturday morning in the 80's.

Gutsy Frog 2013/12/30

Let's Search Manga in Japanese !

Gutsy Frog

Monday 30th December

A week has flown by in a flash of Carol services, church services, Amanda's birthday, Christmas, picnics and all the other happy things that make for a happy family holiday. Each evening, after the children are in bed, the adults relax in the TV room with our coffee/tea/rooibos and discuss the day and the plan for the next before enjoying a couple of episodes of the BBC comedy series "My Family", of which Amanda has the complete boxed set. It helps us unwind before setting off to bed and it is a lovely time laughing together.

Last Monday we spent Amanda's birthday in King's Park, which sits high on northern bank of the Swan River. It is a huge well established park with beautiful trees and lakes and lawns which one can only dream of having at home. The maintenance of the grass is truly amazing and it means that families can sit under the trees on blankets and chairs free of dust and ants - the bane of any picnic. The children have a great time and without too much effort soon have new friends with whom to share their explorations.

How very odd

As part of the discussion on Artemis' excellent post I made:

Rumiko Takahashi is a difficult case to assess. She may be simultaneously the most successful female comic artist ever, AND one of the least feminist comic artists ever. The gender roles in Ranma 1/2 are horrifying.

Who's that one person that is so hard for you to buy for?

All of my Christmas presents have been purchased except for one. (I'm still waiting for a couple to be delivered.) I've mailed off everything to my 5 co-workers in 4 different states.

The one illusive gift is the one that seems to haunt me every single year. Every. Single. Year. The one for my brother. He's one of those people who answers "nothing" or "I don't need anything" when you ask like that's the point of a Christmas gift.

Five older anime series for beginners.

Kin'youbi Mosaic: 12/20/13 Weekly Ramblings

Some quick licensing news. First, Sentai Filmworks has officially licensed the first season of The Familiar of Zero, which aired way back in 2006. It was originally licensed by Geneon Entertainment and released just before they pulled out of the US anime market; it was also released by FUNimation Entertainment when they received the series along with a bunch of other Geneon titles, but have since let the license expire without renewing it due to low sales. Sentai's license rescue will include the dub on the original Geneon release, and they will also release the series on Blu-ray.

The announcement is also notable in that way back in winter of 2012, they licensed the fourth season of this series that aired at that time, but have yet to release it on DVD, likely because they wanted to license and release the first three seasons first. That said, it's worth noting that their press release for their fourth season license said they would release the series as a sub-only DVD, and while current trends make it likely that they will at least release a Blu-ray, it's likely that, unless this first season release does particularly well, seasons 2 through 4 might not get dubbed.

Death, Minecraft and Ranma: Family Bounding and Mourning through Geekdom

Last week, my Grandfather passed away very suddenly. There were no plans for his burial, no money set aside for the funeral cost, and dealing with family politics is always a hassle. Needless to say, it has been a very rough week. Plus to make matters worse, a set of the grandchildren were still aged in single digits, and the death of a family member was very new to them.

The older of the two children, who will be named "Molly" for the sake of the article, took the news a lot harder than her younger brother. Molly is a nine year old girl, who loves to play video games. Mostly things like Pokemon, Minecraft and other games aimed for that younger audience. She's a very sweet-hearted girl, who has the occasional fight with her sibling about teddy bear tea parties being too "girly".

Random Thought (December 10, 2013 at 10:45PM)

Random Thought 550

So I was reviewing for my Computer Systems Architecture final exam, then my being 90's kid nostalgia just got triggered. All of a sudden I want to watch some of my childhood anime that I failed to comprehend and complete in those days. I still remember when anime were still in primetime slot featuring 5 different anime a week with one anime per day. Some of the notable ones were: Hell Teacher Nube, Ranma 1/2, and Fushigi Yuugi. I wish I was a bit older back then so I could understand them. Good thing I got my uncle with me who always guided me on everything that was happening in each episodes. But like I said, I was still too young to remember everything. Ranma 1/2 and Fushigi Yuugi are still very clear in my memory since they were in re-runs a few years back. But as far as I could remember, correct me if I'm wrong, Hell Teacher Nube never got itself a re-run. I remember when I was in grade 2 or so, we used to make some origamis of Nube's claws. I forgot how to do it but it was fun doing it.
