Five older anime series for beginners.

Since I will soon be reviewing anime and manga for a popular website, I decided to do a quick post about five older series to introduce to fans of newer anime, or even those who are just looking for an introduction series.I made a point to choose each from a different genre so that comparing them to one another would be difficult.I also made sure that they were at least a decade old.I would have gone for much older series, however I just don't see a newbie watching Galaxy Express 999 without falling asleep, or Ranma 1/2 without feeling very confused. No offense to either of those mentioned. They each have merit in either artistic presentation or pure nostalgia depending on who you ask. However, what I am looking to talk about are accessible series with tangible story lines.I want to talk about relatable protagonists and villains that are recognizable as something more than a throwback from a saturday morning in the 80's.

Education by Entertainment

I'm not sure why I still watch a lot of anime and read a lot of manga that I do.I got into this stuff when I was in my teens- and back then, it was all revolutionary, because on average, there were a lot more adult themes to anime/manga that you couldn't find in American comics of the same era.French comics were way ahead of American comics in this respect: they often dealt with taboo content such as sex, violence, and real depravity of the human psyche that American comics dealt with superficially, but I hadn't yet discovered these at the time so I'll make the comparison to manga/anime exclusively for now.

Maybe I'm outgrowing it.There are few animes now that I think are trying to do anything intellectual. The last interesting ones that bothered my brain a bit were Psycho-Pass, a story about the struggles of law enforcers in a Minority Report-esque legal system that crosses a bit with Gattica themes of social determinism; and Guilty Crown, to a lesser extent, a story about a young teenager's rise to power in an Animal Farm setting because he arbitrarily come upon a power superior to those around him (hence, the "guilty crown").I found those interesting because of the general themes to the animes- in executation however, looking too closely at any bits of it in isolation from the theme revealed how disintegrated animes and managas really are.I think there's a big difference between the way that an anime is executed and the way a live action series is executed. I think it has something to do with the serialised nature of the typical television anime- it's episodal, and there are usually shitloads of characters. However, at the end of the day, anime characters are all scripted by the same person, and art direction is done by usually one person whose job is to keep things in sync. The big difference between anime and live-action is that with live action, the director inevitably creates the screen production by linking together a handful of actors' interpretations of script- and if you have good actors, you have a lot more space for some really interesting stuff with all of their acting- their acting is a mess of vector quantities trying to push different interpretations of the whole theme in different directions simulatensouly. In animes, the tug is limited to voice.I'll give you an example. One of my favourite characters of all time is Louis Litt from Suits.Sure, he gets some great dialouge- but I'm certain that a lot of my image of this character whenever I close my eyes is due to everything the individual actor (Rick Hoffman) put on top of the written idea. The character has a particular posture, a particular smile, a particular rhythm of speakingand body language that I do not think could be planned on paper.

Manato Turns in His ASTRID CROWN

Fans of ASTRID CROWN were disappointed to end the year with the band losing one member.

On December 30th, the band announced that bassist Manato would be leaving due to home-related issues. ASTRID CROWN will continue activities as three members and they ask for fans' understanding. Read the official announcement left on their OHP for yourself (translated by yours truly):

ex-Saruin + ex-GazettE = Jabell

This Sunday marks a major happening for fans of Saruin, Para:noir, Konig, and perhaps the GazettE! What do these bands have in common, and what is happening on Sunday, you ask? The common factor is members -- and January 26th will be the first live for new band[Jabell].

The band was announced back in September but information has generally flown low on the radar, meaning that news has, for the most part, only broken for fans who have been dedicated followers of one member or another. However, the band has slowly been building up to this live and now that we're hot on its heels, what better time to introduce Jabell?

The following statement was posted on their OHP and translated by our own Jackson.

Winter 2014 Anime Log #1

It's that time again! Winter is upon us, so it's time to look at the barrage of Winter anime! This season, I'm going a bit lighter due to a demanding schedule and to try and find some time for other things (that Bleach retrospective won't continue itself until that damn robot is functioning). That said, I still ended up with a sizable load of shows to follow. Also, I will not be covering shows continuing from last year, so don't expect to see SamFlam, Kill la Kill, Silver Spoon or the like. They all get their own reviews when I finish them, on my own time (but I am indeed following Kill la Kill almost religiously). Continuing shows in other seasons throughout the year will also not be covered, it is strictly all new shows. There will be four logs this time, with a bi-weekly schedule. I hope not to skip weeks this time, but no promises.

And with that explanation done, here's everything I'm following!

Sweet holidays of December

Loving this place, my granpa and granma's home in CHARENTES, FRANCE. I feel the NATURE strong, all around the house, in the garden. We can always hear little birds, and be relax. All is so SIMPLE and so CALM there. We let our spirit go anywhere while we are reading some books next to the FIREPLACE and stay in bed for hours in the MORNING, looking at TREES throughout the window. Time is like stopped. Our soul is SAFE here.

NATSU REACHES TARTARUS HQ ,FAIRY TAIL 365!

FAIRY TAIL 365 begins as Happy and Natsu get to Crawford's house to which Natsu notices there to be something very wrong. Both Mira and Erza are not there. Natsu notices the spilt tea from before to have sleeping pills on them. Natsu quickly deduces that the former chairman has been on Tartarus' side, this is how they're getting information.

Natsu mentions that he'll definitely get a scent and for him not to underestimate a dragon's nose. We see a fully naked Erza wake up to which Kyouka is in front of Erza. She notices that she's captured. Kyouka introduces her to Tartarus, Erza asks where Mira and Crawford are.

NATSU VS SILVER!FAIRY TAIL 366.

Fairy Tail 366 begins as Natsu smashes and knocks out the Former Chairman, he shouts at Franmalth asking where Erza and Mira are. Franmalth mentions that he's gone crazy and broke the bit in which he came in from. Kyouka hears all the noise, she calls out for Yakdoriga to look after Erza whilst she's gone. She tells the frog-looking thing not to touch it as it would be a waste for him to touch it.

Natsu asks Franmalth once more when he says if he's referring to the human captives and that he must also be a Fairy Tail. Happy mentions that they could also be there. Franmalth asks how he got there, it must been the Former Chairman who must be followed.

Ikkoku Was There For My Miserable Unemployed Life: A Maison Ikkoku Post

Personal post for me this time around (and I mean really personal). I don't usually do stuff like this because I feel my personal life should be separated from my entertainment life, but there are always exceptions to the rule.

A little less than a year ago, I was busy submitting job applications everywhere, desperate to move out of my parents' house and not have to rely on them for everything. Well, not exactly in that time frame, as I've been submitting job applications since my first or second years of college. But you know how finding employment can be like. You have to get that application accepted, you have to wait a long time, the interview process, etc. To this day, I'm still getting notifications for applications I submitted months ago that my submission was turned down. And of course, there's the fact that you can't be picky and shit.

AmiAmi Zero's 1/8 Yagyu Jubei Swimwear version: Review (NSFW)

With Nyaruko set to arrive next week in the mail, and my exams around the corner, here's something else to buy myself some time and keep the blog updated in the meantime. A quick overview of an old figure - not exactly very old; it came out more than a year ago in 2012. Since I got her for a cheaply RM 120 (USD $35) including shipping as a preowned figure, so, making a full review of this figure may be inappropriate as the figure may differ from its brand new state. It's just shorter than my usual figure reviews, less detailed, with some factors being omitted while judging the figure.

Sunday is better with cold water?

Considering that today is Sunday, it's a sort of gender-bender themed month, and I can't seem to stop talking about the anime Ranma 1/2, I figured that I would attempt to get it all out of my system in this post for one of the most worthless days in existence.

Ranma Abridged?

I feel awkward about abridged shows, especially when done to a comedy. Maybe it goes back to the old saying that 'you can't make fun of a clown?' Perhaps it's because I know the voices so well, and only a couple of them just feel right? I'm, not sure. I've honestly only watched this one episode though, so there's a chance that the dubbing goes up in quality, as one voice literally sounds like it was recorded over the phone.

Then again, this pilot was uploaded to Youtube in 2009, and the quality of these things have only gotten better as higher quality technology has become more affordable, so maybe I'm being too harsh? Here's the latest episode from December 2013:

Ranma 1/2 Live Action

If the live action movie embodies everything that can go right in a Japanese live action remake of an anime, then Ranma 1/2 shows almost everything that go wrong. I have a soft spot for the original Ranma anime franchise because of its unremitting silliness, even though it wore out its welcome long before the 161 episodes, 12 OVAs, and 2 movies were over and done with. The live action TV special has allthe stupidity of the original and none of the charm. It's sexist, homophobic, and, worst of all, not very funny.

The core problem, I think, is that cardboard characters and repeated tropes are tolerable (barely) in a cartoon but are off-putting in a film with real actors. Thus, the best live action shows are adaptations of slice-of-life or romantic comedy series, such as Usagi Drop, Nodame Cantabile, and Honey and Clover. The anime characters in those series are semi-believable, and that gives real actors room to work. In contrast, a slapstick comedy like Ranma requires actors to behave like cartoons, complete with cartoon-like special effects. In my view, that's only been successful once, in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It's not successful here.
